If ever there was a city with a story to tell, it is Bristol. Enveloped in the hills of South West England, it has its own unmistakable identity, with plenty to see and do for everyone and a traditional Christmas Market in December.
Single Supplement £40
We depart early morning and make our way to Bristol, a city straddling the River Avon in the southwest of England with a prosperous maritime history. The city of Bristol is made up of a series of districts and area, each with its own unique character and charm.
Located in the very heart of Bristol City Centre during December, you will find the Christmas market, home to over 50 unique stalls, selling seasonal delights, crafts and unique items, which are perfect for those hunting for that special Christmas gift as well as entertainment from the likes of Santa and reindeer visits. Enjoy heated seating, delicious drinks and live music in the Jäger Barn Bar, and also try your hand at the much-loved sport of curling for some competitive fun. This is all underneath the glittering Christmas tree, which will be adorned with an array of delightful decorations, and spectacular lights that both welcome and guide you throughout our magical market.
The City Centre and Old City of Bristol are the heart of the city and offer a superb taste of culture, food, history and fantastic shopping opportunities. A trip to Bristol would not be complete without a visit to its central area. There is a lot crammed into one space including Central Bristol and the Bristol Hippodrome.
If you’re searching for a gift, souvenir or statement piece you will find unique pieces of artwork from some of Bristol’s best up-and-coming artists, and some of the areas most established names for sale in these eclectic and exciting shops.
Bristol Shopping Quarter is a great place for shopping, with over 500 stores and more than 50 cafes and restaurants. The streets of the Old City remain much the same today as they were hundreds of years ago and are dotted with cobbled streets, secret alleys and interesting architecture. A wander through the Old City will be overflowing with character. Take a heritage walk around the area to discover what remains of the Norman Bristol and the city wall, then grab a coffee from one of the many independent and quirky coffee shops.
Take a stroll down Park Street, a beautiful Georgian street flanked by excellent independent and boutique shopping, restaurants, cafes and funky bars. Up the hill you will be rewarded with stunning vistas and gorgeous architecture to marvel at. The road is overlooked by the Wills Memorial Building, home to the University of Bristol. Next door is the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.
Near the top of you will find Brandon Hill, the oldest park in Bristol featuring landscaped paths and Cabot Tower; free to enter and climb and offering views across the city to Wales in the north and the Mendip Hills to the south.
On nearby Great George Street is The Georgian House Museum, an 18th-century six-storey townhouse, restored to its original glory. Nearby is the Red Lodge Museum, tucked away behind Park Street on Park Row, featuring an Elizabethan 'Knot' garden dating back to 1580.
Take a stroll back down the hill to see Banksy's famous Well Hung Lover on the side of a building opposite City Hall and College Green. On the other side of College Green is the magnificent Bristol Cathedral.
After breakfast, we load the coach and then the morning is yours to explore Bristol a little more. Perhaps visit the Harbourside, once a busy dock where sailors and merchants would trade goods and set sail for voyages of discovery, Bristol's Harbourside is now an attractive, modern development filled with restaurants, bars, shops and hotels.
Stroll around the water’s edge and you will find Millennium Square, with its fountains and big screen as well as world-class attractions such as Brunel’s SS Great Britain, We The Curious, Bristol Aquarium, Arnolfini, Spike Island, Watershed and M Shed.
Or you could just let the world pass you by whilst watching the boats head in or the swans swim past whilst dangling your feet over the edge with a cold glass of cider in hand.
We meet again early afternoon and begin our journey back.
Please note admissions to museums and monuments are not included.
