Itinerary

Day One

We depart early morning and make our way to the first castle of the tour, Conwy Castle. This magnificent fortress is exceptionally well preserved and contains the most intact set of medieval royal apartments in Wales. The high curtain wall and eight lofty towers rise almost as impressively as when they were built more than 700 years ago. Thanks to restored spiral staircases in its great towers you can walk a complete circuit around the battlements of Conwy Castle. In the distance rise the craggy mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) and spread out below are the harbour and narrow streets of Conwy – still protected by an unbroken 1.3km ring of town walls. It’s enough to take your breath away! Especially when you consider that King Edward I and his architect Master James of St George built both castle and walls in a barely believable four years between 1283 and 1287. After exploring, we continue to our hotel in the Caernarfon area with free time in the evening to explore.

Day Two

After breakfast, we make our way to our second castle, Dolbadarn Castle, the solitary guardian of Snowdonia’s Llanberis Pass. Occupying a lofty, lonely spot overlooking the waters of Llyn Padarn, native-built Dolbadarn Castle was once a vital link in the defences of the ancient kingdom of Gwynedd. Most likely constructed by Llywelyn the Great in the late 12th or early 13th century, it stood watch over the strategic route inland from Caernarfon to the upper Conwy Valley. Today the site is dominated by the sturdy round tower, very different in style to the unmortared slate slabs which make up the castle’s curtain walls. Standing 50ft/15.2m high, the tower’s design was probably inspired by that of similar fortresses built by Llywelyn’s rivals in the borderlands of the southern Marches.

We continue to Snowdonia National Park for free time in the afternoon.  Covering a total of 823 square miles, with its towering peaks and breath-taking valleys, find tranquillity in its lesser-trodden paths and discover its extensive recreation opportunities.

Day Three

Following breakfast, we load the coach before visiting our final castle, Caernarfon Castle, recognised around the world as one of the greatest buildings of the middle ages. Here Edward I and his military architect Master James of St George erected a castle, town walls and a quay all at the same time. The immense curtain walls and daunting King’s Gate were designed to withstand assault, but the polygonal towers, eagle statues and multi-coloured masonry echo imperial Roman architecture, especially the walls of Constantinople. Caernarfon is a castle of dreams. A legend brought to life. Even after 700 years it still stirs the imagination like no other Welsh castle. After exploring the castle, we make our journey home, arriving late evening.

Please note that admissions to museums and monuments are not included unless otherwise stated.
